Private Jets – Super Mid Size
Super Mid Size Jets or “Super Mids” are one of the most popular segment of Private Jet aircraft and have been growing in numbers for the last several years. A super mid size jet generally blends the Large cabin size and comfort with the mid size operating cost to produce an aircraft that is both extremely comfortable and generally has reasonable operating costs. A brief summary of several popular Super Mid Size Jets are below.
The super popular Challenger 300 aircraft has a great combination of comfort and very good short field performance. It has been very popular with both owners and charter customers and after they first came out there was a backlog and long wait to get them. The Challenger 300 was upgraded to the even more capable Challenger 350 aircraft.
The Falcon 50 was an aircraft that was really ahead of its time in a lot of ways. It does not have quite as a large of a cabin as the other ‘Super Mids’ but it was one of the first popular business aircraft to excel in the ‘High and Hot’ airport environments. This 3 engine aircraft is an airplane that could get in and out of Aspen on days when other aircraft were stuck waiting for the temperature to go down or the weather to change. One worker at the Aspen Airport would call bad weather a Falcon 50 day because that is all that would be landing or taking off. The Falcon 50’s are getting a little old now and are no longer manufactured but there are a lot of bargains out there for this capable aircraft.
The Gulfstream 200 got its start from its origins as the Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI) Galaxy Aircraft. Gulfstream purchased the design of the Galaxy (and also the Astra) and introduced the G200. The G200 competed with the Challenger 300 on cabin size but not on runway performance but it was very popular in some of the large fractional programs. The G280 replaced the G200 with a totally redesigned wing based on the very capable GV and subsequently improved the performance of the G280 as compared with the G200. The G200 and G280 are very popular with customers because of their spacious cabins and cargo capacity. You can find used G200’s for less than 4 Million — A really good price if you do not need short runway performance.
